What Is Cosentyx
Cosentyx (secukinumab) is a biologic medicine that targets a protein called interleukin-17A (IL-17A), which plays a central role in driving inflammation in several conditions. By blocking IL-17A, Cosentyx reduces the inflammation responsible for symptoms.
Cosentyx is used to treat:
- Plaque psoriasis: Moderate to severe plaques on the skin in adults and children
- Psoriatic arthritis: Joint disease associated with psoriasis
- Ankylosing spondylitis: Inflammatory arthritis mainly affecting the spine
- Non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis: An earlier form of axial spondyloarthritis
How it works:
IL-17A is an immune signalling protein that is overactive in conditions like psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This excess IL-17A drives inflammation in skin, joints, and other tissues. Cosentyx binds directly to IL-17A and neutralises it, reducing the inflammatory signals that cause symptoms.

How To Take Cosentyx
Your dose:
Your doctor will prescribe the dose appropriate for your condition. For plaque psoriasis, a common schedule involves a loading phase with weekly injections for the first month, followed by monthly maintenance injections. Doses and schedules vary by condition. Always follow your doctor's instructions.
Before you start:
- You will be checked for tuberculosis (TB) and other infections before starting
- Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins, and supplements you take
- Let your doctor know if you have any history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as Cosentyx may worsen Crohn's disease
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
How it's given:
- Cosentyx is injected under the skin (subcutaneously). Common injection sites include the thigh, abdomen, and upper outer arm
- Your nurse will train you to self-inject at home
- Allow the syringe or pen to reach room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes before injecting
- Rotate injection sites with each dose

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Cosentyx
Like all biologic medicines, Cosentyx can cause side effects. The most important ones to know about are:
- Upper respiratory tract infections: Colds and runny noses are common. Seek medical advice if you develop a more serious infection
- Injection site reactions: Redness, pain, or bruising at the injection site. Usually mild
- Oral thrush or genital candidiasis (yeast infections): IL-17A plays a role in defending against candida infections, so blocking it can increase susceptibility. Speak to your doctor if this becomes a problem
- Inflammatory bowel disease: Cosentyx may worsen or trigger IBD (particularly Crohn's disease). Tell your doctor immediately if you develop new or worsening stomach pain, diarrhoea, or blood in your stools
- Neutropenia (low white blood cells): Uncommon, but your doctor may check blood counts periodically
Contact your doctor or pharmacist if any side effect concerns you.

Does Cosentyx Interact With Other Medicines
Tell your doctor and pharmacist everything you are taking.
Key interactions include:
- Other biologics: Combining Cosentyx with other biologic medicines increases infection risk and is generally not recommended
- Live vaccines: Avoid live vaccines during treatment. Discuss any upcoming vaccinations with your doctor before starting
- CYP450 substrates: IL-17A can affect levels of some liver enzymes. Starting Cosentyx may affect the blood levels of some medicines. Your doctor will check for any relevant interactions
Never start, stop, or change any medicine without speaking to your doctor first.

Popular FAQ
How quickly does Cosentyx work for psoriasis?
Many people with plaque psoriasis notice significant skin clearing within the first few weeks. In clinical studies, most people who responded to Cosentyx saw clear or almost clear skin within 16 weeks. For joint conditions like psoriatic arthritis, improvement in pain and swelling may take a few weeks to a few months.
I have Crohn's disease as well as psoriasis. Can I still take Cosentyx?
This is an important question for your specialist. Cosentyx is not recommended in active Crohn's disease and may worsen it. If you have both psoriasis and Crohn's disease, your doctor will consider a biologic that is appropriate for both conditions, such as ustekinumab or an anti-TNF agent.
Can Cosentyx be used in children?
Yes. Cosentyx is approved for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in children and adolescents. Your paediatric specialist will determine the appropriate dose based on your child's weight.
