Edurant (rilpivirine) is an antiretroviral medicine belonging to a class called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). It is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents (aged 12 and over, weighing at least 35kg) who have not previously been treated for HIV and whose viral load is no more than 100,000 copies/mL at the start of treatment.
Edurant is always used as part of a combination antiretroviral regimen and is not taken alone.
How it works:
HIV uses an enzyme called reverse transcriptase to copy its genetic material. Rilpivirine binds to and blocks this enzyme in a different way to NRTIs, preventing HIV from replicating. When combined with other antiretroviral medicines, it helps keep your viral load undetectable.

Why must I eat with every dose?
Taking Edurant with a meal is not optional. A normal or high-calorie meal nearly doubles the amount of rilpivirine your body absorbs compared to taking it fasted. A protein shake or supplement drink alone is not sufficient. Always take it with a proper meal to ensure the medicine works as intended.
Can I take heartburn medicines with Edurant?
This depends on the type. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole must not be taken with Edurant as they prevent adequate absorption. H2 blockers can be used with careful timing. Regular antacids can be used if taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any stomach acid medicines.
