What Is Edurant

Edurant (rilpivirine) is an antiretroviral medicine belonging to a class called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). It is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents (aged 12 and over, weighing at least 35kg) who have not previously been treated for HIV and whose viral load is no more than 100,000 copies/mL at the start of treatment.

Edurant is always used as part of a combination antiretroviral regimen and is not taken alone.

How it works:

HIV uses an enzyme called reverse transcriptase to copy its genetic material. Rilpivirine binds to and blocks this enzyme in a different way to NRTIs, preventing HIV from replicating. When combined with other antiretroviral medicines, it helps keep your viral load undetectable.

How To Take Edurant

Your dose:

One 25mg tablet taken once daily. Always take it exactly as prescribed.

How to take it:

  • Edurant must be taken with a meal. Taking it on an empty stomach significantly reduces how much is absorbed, making it much less effective
  • Take it at the same time every day
  • Swallow the tablet whole
  • Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant, as they can reduce its absorption

Before you start:

  • Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins, and supplements you take
  • Let your doctor know if you have any liver problems, including hepatitis B or C
  • Edurant is not recommended if you are taking medicines that reduce stomach acid (proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole or pantoprazole), as these can significantly reduce rilpivirine levels
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant

Ongoing check-ups:

Regular blood tests to monitor your viral load, CD4 count, and liver function are important throughout treatment.

Consistency matters with HIV treatment. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you are having difficulty.

Does Edurant Interact With Other Medicines

Edurant has several important interactions. Tell your doctor and pharmacist everything you are taking.

Key ones include:

  • Proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole): These significantly reduce rilpivirine absorption and must not be used with Edurant
  • H2 blockers (such as ranitidine, famotidine): Can be used, but must be taken at least 12 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant
  • Antacids: Take at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant
  • Rifampicin and rifabutin: Significantly reduce rilpivirine levels
  • St John's Wort: Reduces rilpivirine levels significantly. Avoid it
  • Certain anticonvulsants and other medicines: Tell your doctor about any prescription medicines you take

Never start, stop, or change any medicine without speaking to your doctor first.

Popular FAQ

Why must I eat with every dose?

Taking Edurant with a meal is not optional. A normal or high-calorie meal nearly doubles the amount of rilpivirine your body absorbs compared to taking it fasted. A protein shake or supplement drink alone is not sufficient. Always take it with a proper meal to ensure the medicine works as intended.

Can I take heartburn medicines with Edurant?

This depends on the type. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole must not be taken with Edurant as they prevent adequate absorption. H2 blockers can be used with careful timing. Regular antacids can be used if taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after Edurant. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any stomach acid medicines.
