GONAL-f® is a recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) used in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatments, such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF). It stimulates the ovaries to develop multiple follicles, increasing the number of eggs available for retrieval.
GONAL-f® is also used to treat anovulatory infertility in women who have not responded to clomiphene citrate.
In men, it may be prescribed alongside human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to stimulate sperm production.
Back To TopThe dosage of GONAL-f® is individualised based on the patient’s response to treatment. For ovarian stimulation, the typical starting dose is 75–150 IU per day, administered as a subcutaneous injection.
The dose may be adjusted by your fertility specialist depending on your ovarian response, as monitored through blood tests and ultrasounds.
Treatment usually begins within the first 7 days of the menstrual cycle and continues until the desired follicular development is achieved.
Back To TopIf you forget to take a dose, contact your fertility clinic or doctor immediately for advice.
Do not administer a double dose to make up for the missed one.
Timing is critical in fertility treatments, so follow your doctor’s instructions closely.
Back To TopIn case of an overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include abdominal discomfort, bloating, or signs of ovarian hyperstimulation.
Contact the Poisons Information Centre (Australia: 13 11 26) or your doctor for guidance.

Back To TopHow does GONAL-f® work in fertility treatments? GONAL-f® contains follitropin alfa, a recombinant form of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). It stimulates the ovaries to develop multiple follicles, increasing the number of eggs available for retrieval during IVF. This enhances the chances of successful fertilisation and implantation.
Can I administer GONAL-f® myself? Yes, GONAL-f® is designed for self-administration. The pre-filled pen makes it easy to inject the medication subcutaneously. Your doctor or nurse will provide instructions to ensure proper technique.
What should I do if I experience side effects? Mild side effects, such as redness or swelling at the injection site, are common and usually temporary. If you experience severe symptoms, such as signs of OHSS, contact your doctor immediately. Your healthcare team is here to support you.
Can GONAL-f® be used during pregnancy? No, GONAL-f® must not be used during pregnancy. It is specifically designed for use during ovarian stimulation cycles before conception. If you suspect you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately.
How should I store GONAL-f®? Store GONAL-f® in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C. If refrigeration is unavailable, it can be stored below 25°C for up to three months. After first use, the pen may be stored below 25°C for up to 28 days. Always keep the medication in its original packaging to protect it from light and moisture.
